Preparing for Labor and Delivery: Third-Trimester Care

Labor and Delivery support is a key part of the work I do with patients during their last trimester of pregnancy. Around 32 weeks is the optimal time to start preparing for labor and delivery, and ideally continuing with regular, consistent treatment throughout (32 - 42 weeks) this whole period.

Research shows that regular acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies during the last trimester lowers numerous risk factors: i.e. preterm labor, preeclampsia, stalled labor, fewer epidural and c-section rates, less perineum tearing, and fewer postpartum complications among others.
During these last weeks of pregnancy - women often experience swollen feet and legs due to all the pressure and the restriction on the mid-body (where the baby sits). This impacts all the venous blood returning from the lower limbs. Acupuncture is extremely helpful in reducing the swelling, which makes a much more comfortable last trimester for Mom.
Acupuncture can also significantly reduce the risk of pregnancy high blood pressure (preeclampsia), regulate blood sugar, address stress and anxiety, support good sleep, and treat various aches and pains that commonly occur.
As well, the 32- to 36-week range of the last trimester is the best time to support optimal position for the baby in preparation for labor and delivery.

If baby is "breech," (a configuration where the baby's head is not downward) Acupuncture - in combination with Moxibustion therapy - has excellent success rates for turning baby into an optimal head-down birthing position.
So don't wait until you're 40+ weeks to seek out Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine!
